‘The Stone Building and Other Places’ by Aslı Erdoğan
Turkish novelist Aslı Erdoğan was released from pre-trial detention in December 2016 after spending 133 days in jail. She had been arrested and charged under Article 302 of the Turkish Penal Code: Disrupting the unity and integrity of the state. The charges were brought as she was a member of the advisory board of Özgür Gündem, a newspaper since shuttered over links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Torn Ballet Shoes, and a Life Upended
For the first time in half a year, the Turkish novelist Asli Erdogan returned the other day to her Istanbul apartment, a home left ransacked when she was arrested and sent to prison in August.
She discovered that many things were missing: flash drives containing her work and reviews from European literary journals, letters written to her by Kurdish prisoners, and books on Kurdish history. Left behind were the objects of another of her passions: her ballet shoes, torn apart.
